A WORD FROM
THE CURATOR
“The heart palpitates anxiously upon looking at the present finished issue. Within it, there is so much beauty amassed, and not just the kind of beauty with which one can enjoy an aesthetic experience but also that which the soul aches to possess as well. The theme “Collectors and Collections” has been a choice since the Carnets were created, and it now sees the light of day at last. Both the notions of ‘the collector’ and ‘the collection’ are present, but we hope that also present is the notion of ‘collectionism’, in its sense of a compulsive taste for gathering objects, artworks and furniture that please one’s senses. The outcome pleases us very much. Diogo Mayo is especially fond of this issue, which is to put it mildly, since it fits every aesthetic bone in his body. Personally, I must admit that I also feel quite satisfied with my own photographs that are here published. I expect to continue exploring the art of photography and perfecting the technique — it is a type of art that forces the education of the eye. I would also like to give extensive thanks to Sebastiano Bazzichetto, this issue’s guest curator, who has contributed with vibrant, cultured texts, and other invaluable contributions. He sees this Carnet as a little cabinet of refined curiosities, and, in his words, holding “a book or a magazine with pictures and text is not merely printed material, but a gallery of thoughts, reflections and emotions”. Our team hopes that the reader will think the same of this issue, and if we may make a suggestion, we would advise experiencing it slowly and at ease, for an exquisite object might be missed!” — Pierre Roffe
